9th console generation predictions – scorecard
It’s been over two and a half years since I published my list of 9th gen predictions, so here’s a scorecard to track how right (or wrong) I was! Will be updated as time goes on (last updated 2020 Oct 30)
Correct
Cheaper versions of consoles with no cd drives
PS5 will have an answer to HD rumble
Neither will demand a constant internet connection
Microsoft will have a streaming service
Some 9th gen games will not fit on 1 disc
Nintendo will make a VR headset the console slots into
Nintendo VR helmet will have a fun design
Some 9th gen games will ship on multiple discs
It’s complicated
PS5/Series X support 4k as standard - while both consoles do output in 4k, it may be upscaled, or sacrificed for higher frame-rates
Consoles will have 1tb hard drives - the PS5 has a 825GB hardrive, which is about .8 of a terabyte. When I made this prediction, my intended meaning was that they wouldn't produce anything over 1TB, which I considered to be the smallest they would attempt to get away with.
Incorrect
9th gen may not happen till 2022
PS5 controller will be in two halves
Xbox console to be named Xbox 10 - apparently I over-estimated Microsoft here, the real name is somehow even stupider
Series X controller will have rear paddles as default
Series X will have an answer to HD rumble
Sony bundle VR at launch
Nintendo VR will be bundled with a game that requires physically interacting with other players - I feel genuinely blind-sided here

9th gen will be the last featuring cd drives
By the end of the 9th gen, streaming will be as common as downloads are
Both consoles will accept phones as input devices
Digital games sold via physical media (toys ect.)
Digital item/code reader built into consoles
Microsoft release VR tech
Nintendo 9th Gen Predictions
Nintendo 9th gen will be a hybrid
Nintendo 9th gen will further embrace online ecosystem
Nintendo 9 will have native voice chat
Nintendo 9 will not embrace online as much as their competitors
Nintendo 9 will not have more than 256gb internal storage
Nintendo 9 will expand on HD rumble
The console will emit scents
The console will have a Cooking Mama game with smells
Nintendo 9 controllers will strap to your hands like power gloves
Nintendo 9 will use your TV as a touchscreen
Nintendo 9 will function with multiple amiibo
Amiibo positioning will matter
Nintendo will release a mah-jong set for the console
Games Workshop will release miniatures for the console
Wizards of the Coast will release miniatures for the console
